A top 15 player in both singles and doubles, she achieved her career-high singles ranking of world No. 12 on 26 November 2018. On 10 May 2021, she became world No. 1 in women's doubles for the first time.
Mertens has won six singles and 15 doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including three Grand Slam titles in women's doubles: the 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open partnering Aryna Sabalenka, and at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships partnering Hsieh Su-wei. She also has 11 singles and 13 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. While her most prolific success has come in doubles, including winning the Indian Wells and Miami doubles titles in 2019 to complete the Sunshine Double, Mertens has also been very successful in singles. There, she has reached the semifinals at the 2018 Australian Open and the quarterfinals at the 2019 and 2020 US Open.
