The son of a shoemaker, Cave was born in Newton near Rugby (Warwickshire) in 1691 and attended high school there, but he was expelled from there because of an accusation of theft from the headmaster. Then he changed a large number of professions, including a firewood seller, a reporter and an employee at a printing house.

He hatched the idea of creating a magazine that would be devoted to absolutely all topics that interested the educated public: from commerce to poetry.
