Dill ( lat. Anéthum ) is a monotypic genus of short-lived annual herbaceous plants of the Umbelliferae family . The only species is fragrant dill , or garden dill ( Anethum graveolens ).

The plants are found wild in southwestern and central Asia ; As a garden plant, they are ubiquitous.

Distribution and ecology

It grows wild in Asia Minor , North Africa , Iran , the Himalayas . As a cultivated and weed plant - everywhere on all continents.

Successful cultivation requires warm to hot summers and plenty of sunshine; even a small shade will significantly reduce the yield. Rich, well-drained soil is also desirable. Seeds are viable for 3-10 years. Plants grown for seed for later planting should not be placed near fennel , as the two species may produce hybrids .
