In 1894, Vikelas participated in the 1st International Sports Congress in Paris, which decided to organize the modern Olympic Games. During the discussion of the organization of the first Games, he put forward and defended the proposal to hold them in 1896 in Athens. According to the Olympic Charter approved at this congress, the IOC president must represent the country hosting the next Olympic Games. At the same congress, at the age of 59, Demetrius Vikelas was elected the first president of the International Olympic Committee.
