Christiaan Eijkman was a Dutch biochemist, professor, physician, and physiologist born on August 11, 1858 in Nijkerk. He is well-known for his research on beriberi and vitamins. Eijkman was a citizen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and passed away in Utrecht on November 5, 1930 .
Eijkman was educated at the University of Amsterdam and later at the Pasteur Institute. His doctoral advisor was Thomas Place, and he worked in the field of Physiology & Behavior.
In 1929, Christiaan Eijkman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the antineuritic vitamin, which helped to better understand and treat the disease beriberi. His work had a profound impact on the field of nutrition and the understanding of the role of vitamins in human health.
