The Bulgari ring was sold at an evening auction for nearly $16 million.
A ring with two diamonds - colorless and blue - was sold at Christie's evening auction for $15.8 million, RIA Novosti reports citing representatives of the trading house.
According to the report, the ring was made in 1972 with two stones - a 10.95-carat blue diamond and a 9.87-carat colorless one. Jewelry was included in the list of the most expensive such products of the recession.
In 2008, the absolute price record for diamonds was set by the Wittelsbach blue diamond from the dowry of Infanta Margherita Teresa of Spain weighing 35.56 carats. The stone was sold at the Christie's jewelry auction in London for $24.3 million. The total cost of the stone almost doubled its provenance.
In November 2009, at an auction in Hong Kong, Christie's sold a 5-carat pink diamond for $10.8 million. The stone was put up for auction by the London jewelery firm Graff Diamonds. Each carat of a bright pink stone cost the new owner $ 2.2 million - this was the absolute world record for the cost per carat.
In May 2009, a rare bright blue diamond with no internal flaws weighing 7.03 carats was sold at a Sotheby's jewelry auction. It became one of the most remarkable gems ever to be auctioned at Sotheby's and set two records at once.

Blue ring
The stone was sold for the then-record price per carat of any gemstone ever put up for public sale, and at the same time became the most expensive fancy bright blue diamond ever sold at auction. The stone was purchased by a well-known connoisseur and collector from Hong Kong, Joseph Lu Longhan, who paid $ 9.48 million for the diamond. He exercised his right to name the precious stone, which is now called the Josephine Star.
