BREVIBLOC (Esmolol Hydrochloride) is an anti-arrhythmic drug that comes in liquid form and is to be used as a beta blocker. It is available by prescription only and can be administered via injection or intravenous drip. It is produced and sold by Baxter International.
BREVIBLOC can be used for Supraventricular Tachycardia or Noncompensatory Sinus Tachycardia. It regains control of ventricular rate in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter in perioperative, postoperative, or other emergent circumstances in which short-term control of ventricular rate with a short-acting agent is the end-goal. The injection can also be used for noncompensatory sinus tachycardia when it is judged by a healthcare professional that the rapid heart rate requires specific intervention. It is important to note that BREVIBLOC is only intended for short-term use.
Another use for BREVIBLOC is for intraoperative and postoperative tachycardia and/or hypertension. As with the aforementioned uses, it is recommended to use for short-term treatment of tachycardia and hypertension that occur during induction and tracheal intubation, during surgery, upon emergence from anesthesia, and in the postoperative period. It is not recommended to use the BREVIBLOC injection to prevent such events.
Potential side effects that can occur with this medicine include the following:
