Athanasius Kircher was a polymath who held numerous occupations including astronomer, writer, photographer, mathematician, historian, physicist, composer, volcanologist, biologist, and geologist. He was born on May 12, 1602, in Geisa and held citizenship in both the Papal States and the Holy Roman Empire.
