Alfred Werner (12 December 1866 – 15 November 1919) was a Swiss chemist known for his work in inorganic chemistry, specifically on the configuration of transition metal complexes. He was born in Mulhouse, France, and held Swiss citizenship. Werner completed his education at ETH Zurich, and later at the University of Zurich. He was a doctoral student under the supervision of Arthur Rudolf Hantzsch.

Throughout his career, Werner made significant contributions to the field of inorganic chemistry, which led to him being awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He passed away in Zürich, Switzerland, on 15 November 1919.
