Overview

The ANTrepreneur Center was founded in 2014 to help students from the University of California Irvine to integrate entrepreneurial and innovative thinking. This includes programs and services for students interested in entrepreneurship and the tools and guidance to help students develop ideas into products and companies. The program is industry- and idea-agnostic and works to encourage entrepreneurship across the University of California Irvine campus.

The program offers mentorship, integrative learning, and connections to the entrepreneurial network of Irvine, California. ANTrepreneur Center's efforts are to achieve the program's goals of creating an entrepreneurial community and culture at the University of California, Irvine, to enhance students' entrepreneurial leadership skills and facilitate student efforts to launch ventures.

Funding

The ANTrepreneur Center works to use the UCI's Student Startup Fund to help students develop their ideas. The fund covers specific project-related expenses, up to $1,000, to develop their concepts or startups. The criteria of the funding is broken down by allowable and unallowable expenses. The following are allowable expenses in the program:

  • Prototyping materials
  • Project supplies
  • Specialized software (less than $1,000)
  • Small equipment (UCI retains ownership of the equipment)
  • Fees associated with attending project-related conferences or events
  • Expenses related to customer discovery
  • Expenses related to lab testing

Unallowable expenses in UCI's Student Startup Fund include the following:

  • Living expenses, such as rent, food, or gas
  • Stipends or payroll expenses
  • Equipment greater than $5,000
  • Personal technology, such as laptops, tablets, or phones
  • Entertainment
  • Alcohol

The Student Startup Fund offers allowances for expenses needing higher approvals, which include for services or consultant agreements, such as for marketing or software development; legal fees, especially for corporate formation expenses; patent fees; and costs to host an event.
