Funding Round attributes
Somnee, a neurotechnology startup focused on improving sleep through artificial intelligence-powered wearables, announced the close of a $10 million seed extension funding round. The round was led by Khosla Ventures and included participation from TIME Ventures (Marc Benioff), LEAD VC (founded by the Adidas family), the Orlando Magic’s ownership group (the DeVos family), Seaside Ventures, Nelstone Ventures, and design firm Metalab.
Founded in 2022, Somnee was launched by sleep scientist Dr. Matt Walker, PhD, along with fellow neuroscientists from the University of California, Berkeley. Other key figures include Dr. Robert Knight, a professor of neuroscience at UC Berkeley, and CEO Tim Rosa, formerly of Fitbit. The company’s mission is to use non-invasive brain stimulation to improve sleep quality and duration, based on scientific research and clinical testing.
Somnee’s flagship product is a wearable smart headband that uses proprietary EEG+ sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms to detect brainwave activity. It delivers mild, personalized electrical stimulation to help users fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and reduce sleep disturbances. According to the company, clinical research has demonstrated that users fall asleep twice as fast, sleep over 30 minutes longer, and experience one-third fewer nighttime disruptions compared to baseline sleep.
