In 2014, the game under development was transferred to a new game engine. The version on the old engine became known as Legacy, and the new one was called Experimental. On October 6, 2016, the ability to launch the Legacy version was removed from the client part of the game.

The new version of the game is profoundly different from Legacy, largely due to the new version of the Unity engine.

Although most of the items that were in Legacy have been moved to the new version, many of them have been changed. There are also new types of various equipment. Also in the new version, the construction system has been changed — the system of rotting buildings has been worked out and a stability indicator has been added, which does not allow players to build huge "castles to the skies". In addition, double doors, hatches, stairs and fences have been added.

On many game servers, the map is procedurally generated. This means that the game does not have a single game map for all game servers.

The drawing system, as in Legacy, introduced an element of high-end content into the game. Basic crafting items were available, but more serious stuff required blueprints.

In July 2016, the experience system was implemented. The old drawing system had to be abandoned, but the developers left the opportunity to return to the version with it. The game has become more like a survival simulator with elements of a classic RPG. The player gains experience and level, and can unlock new items for crafting.

In November 2016, the experience system was replaced with a component system. Crafting of all things has become available to players, but some items require component parts.

In 2017, a system of components plus drawings appeared.

On July 16, 2015, the developers added the ability to buy things with coloring books on the Steam trading platform and in the game store. This purchase does not give any advantages, but only changes the appearance of the item in the game.

In October 2016, Steam Workshop support was added to Rust, which allowed players to create their own coloring pages for items.

In November 2016, it became possible to turn skins into fragments: wood, metal, fabric. For them, you can buy containers, opening which, the player receives a random skin.

In September 2017, the drawing system was returned to the game, but the developers combined it with the component system. From now on, initially only basic items are available for crafting, and for crafting more "advanced" ones, it is necessary to study them.

On December 12, 2019, Facepunch studio blocked mice manufactured by A4Tech (Bloody) by VendorID in order to combat so-called "macros". On the official support page of the game there is a message that mice from other manufacturers remain unblocked, although there are models with similar functionality to mice from A4Tech in the model ranges of Razer, Logitech, Corsair, Steelseries, Zowie, HyperX, ROG. This situation has caused outrage among many Rust players
