Reinhard Selten was a German economist and mathematician born in Wrocław on October 5, 1930. He held German citizenship and was known for his contributions to game theory. Selten was also an Esperantist.

Selten studied at Goethe University Frankfurt, where he received his education in economics. His doctoral advisor was mathematician Wolfgang Franz, and one of his doctoral students was economist Eric van Damme.

Throughout his career, Selten made significant contributions to the academic discipline of economics. In 1994, he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work in game theory.

Reinhard Selten passed away in Poznań on August 23, 2016.
