Rava-Ruska was first mentioned in documents in the 15th century. It is known that in 1455 Prince Wladyslaw of Belz and Mazovia named a small settlement on the Rata River after his possession in the Masovian land - Rawa, with the addition of the word "Ruska" to distinguish it from Rawa Mazowiecka, located in Poland.

After the administrative reform in Ukraine in 2020, the city of Rava-Ruska became the center of the newly created Rava-Ruska territorial community.
