It was Morley who initiated the creation and "brain" of the initially successful label ZTT Records; his ideas provided the sensational rise of the pop group Frankie Goes to Hollywood. For a while he worked as the manager of the Manchester punk band The Drones.

The experimental electronic pop project Art of Noise, of which he was one of the organizers, brought Paul Morley great fame.
