The Open Material Transfer Agreement (OpenMTA) is similar to a material-transfer agreement (MTA). OpenMTA is a standardized legal agreement that enables researchers working at institutions (academic, industry, government, and community laboratories) to share their biological materials with each other.

The OpenMTA was developed by the BioBricks Foundation in collaboration with the OpenPlant Initiative with the intention to reflect the values of openness in conjunction, with the practical aspects of transferring biological materials between people and organizations.
