KatKoyn (originally launched as Nyancoin) is an open-source, peer-to-peer, digital currency originally based on the Nyan Cat meme. The cryptocurrency was launched in January 2014 and is currently traded on Txbit.io as well as Komodo Wallet. The coin uses the Scrypt algorithm and Proof of Work for mining new coins. KatKoyn can be purchased with any major cryptocurrency or any fiat currency. The maximum supply of KayKoyn is 337 million coins, of which 322,805,606 are in circulation. Each block in the KatKoyn blockchain offers 337 coins. The software of the coin is based on Litecoin.
The coin was launched as the first officially licensed cryptocurrency, with the licensed Nyan Cat image used for the coin. A few months after the launch of KatKoyn, the original developers disappeared, and the original KatKoyn website and other services ceased working. However, the software continued to run by enough people who continued to mine the coin.
The original specifications for the KatKoyn were intended to be 337 million coins, which were intended to halve every 337,000 blocks; this changed after a few weeks to 500,000. Due to another error by the original developers of the coin, the actual total of the block rewards and the total coin supply is unknown, as the rewards continue to halve until they reach zero. The theoretical amount has been calculated to be around 340,285,749 coins. Although this is expected to be less, as many blocks exist with less than the maximum amount generated. The halving, at the rate experienced so far, is expected to continue until approximately 2049 until the rewards will reach zero.
Another group developed a nyancoin after the original Nyancoin was launched in 2014. This coin was 10 percent pre-mined, offering the founders a chance to earn more of the coin, while the coin did not work properly and did not receive support of the Nyan Cat creator. This imitation coin was later renamed to CRD and disappeared soon after.
As of January 2023, the Nyancoin became known as KatKoyn. The blockchain is unchanged, as are all previous transactions, addresses, wallets and network operations.
