Cēsis is a town in Latvia, the administrative center of the Cēsis region. It is located in the northern part of the Central Vidzeme Upland on the Gauja River and is built on a series of ridges above the river overlooking the woods below, 90 km northeast of Riga. Population - 17.2 thousand people (2016). The town is popular among tourists and locals for The Cesis Medieval castle. Dating back to the 13th-17th centuries it was one of the strongest fortresses of the Livonian Order and nowadays it is one of the most impressive and best-preserved sets of castle ruins in Latvia.
