The existence of a fire department in Belarus is mentioned in the chronicles of the 14th century of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was available in cities with the so-called Magdeburg Law.

Fires in cities, as evidenced by chronicles, sometimes took on such a large size that residents of houses that had not yet caught fire left their homes, went into the field and settled in an open-air camp. They hid everything valuable in basements, cellars or buried in the ground. At the time, it was the only way to save property from fire.

The official date of creation of a professional fire department is considered to be July 13, 1853 according to the old style. The first professional fire brigades were formed in the cities of Belarus. Their equipment was more than modest: a barrel of water, a bulky hand pump, ropes, several hoses, shovels, buckets, purples and axes. Now all this became the property of museums, and in those days such simple devices saved the life of more than one person. The main duty and notification point was a calancha, the cost of uniforms was deducted from the salary, the service in the unit was conducted around the clock without days off.

During the Great Patriotic War, the fire regions defended their country and in the ranks of the Soviet army, participated in the partisan movement.

In the difficult post-war period, when there was neither equipment nor office space, the simplest fire equipment was lacking, firefighters "without drying their sleeves" selflessly fought the elements. By 1970-1988 The fire department was already well equipped with equipment, the machines of domestic production ZIL, GAZ, KaMaZ were in service.

Today, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Belarus is a service that is ready to come to the aid of people at any second. This was the case in 1853, when the fire service was formed, in 1999, when the Ministry was reorganized, this will always be the case. Over the years, trends have developed, the tasks and legal field of activity have been clearly defined, a team of professionals has been formed, exemplary solving the tasks set. The main aspects of emergency protection have been regulated by law. the role and responsibility of government bodies of all levels, enterprises, organizations in ensuring protection against emergencies have been increased. A systematic increase in the level of safety of the functioning of the economy and the vital activity of the population has been established.

At all times, for entire generations of rescuers, devotion to duty and the desire to help people in trouble have been and remain characteristic features. And for most employees, this has become not just an obligation, but a part of life.

Time passed - the authorities, economic and political situations changed, but there was always and remains the need for society to protect against fire. Ensuring the safety of people and fighting fires is the main task of rescuers at all times!
