Stranger Things is a television series created by the Duffer Brothers, who also serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The first season, produced by Monkey Massacre Productions and Levy's 21 Laps Entertainment, was released on Netflix on July 15, 2016. The season's second, third, and fourth seasons began in October 2017, July 2019, and May and July 2022, respectively. The series was renewed for a fifth and final season in February 2022.

The term dates back to the Middle Ages and first described preparatory drawings for works of art such as paintings, frescoes, tapestries and stained glass windows. In the 19th century, cartoons, beginning with Punch magazine in 1843, initially ironically referred to humorous artwork in magazines and newspapers. It was later used in political cartoons and cartoons as well. As this medium developed in his early 20th century, it came to refer to animated films resembling printed cartoons.
