The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is a series of underground comics created by the American artist Gilbert Shelton. First published in 1967 in the underground Austin, Texas newspaper The Rag, the comics center on the titular Freak Brothers—Phineas T. Phreak, Freewheelin' Franklin Freek, and Fat Freddy Freekowski—three stoner freaks who live in San Francisco. The Freak Brothers, joined by Fat Freddy's sarcastic cat (who would later get his own spin-off), gained wider popularity after Shelton moved to San Francisco in 1969 and founded Rip Off Press with other fellow underground "comix" cartoonists. Rip Off Press would go on to publish thirteen Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers volumes over the next thirty years. Despite minimal promotion and fanfare, the comic series gained widespread international popularity, has been translated into twelve languages, and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. In 2021, the series was adapted into an animated TV show called The Freak Brothers for the streaming network Tubi.
