Founders

The five founders created the firm as a merchant bank to specialize in buying and selling companies and providing financial advice to wealthy families and medium-sized corporations. Rubenstein was a former partner in the law firm Shaw, Pittman, Potts and Trowbridge; Norris was the former Marriott Corp. vice president in charge of mergers and acquisitions; D'Aniello was the former vice president in charge of financial strategy for Marriott; Conway Jr. was the former chief financial officer for MCIi Communications Corp.; and Rosenbaum was the former vice president of Dyson-Kissner-Morgan Corp., a New York-based investment firm specializing in leveraged buyouts.

Leadership

William E. Conway Jr., the cofounder, CEO, and co-chairman of the board, was previously the firm's co-chief executive officer and chief investment officer. Prior to forming Carlyle in 1987, Conway was the senior vice president and chief financial officer of MCI Communications Corporation. He was also a former chairman of the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Catholic University of America.
