History

The company was formed in 1993 by separating the Surgutneftegaz oil production association, Kirishi Refinery and marketing enterprises from Glavtyumenneftegaz. It was soon privatized, but the exact structure of the owners is still unknown.

In 2004, the company received a license to develop a large Talakan field (production is conducted by the oil and gas production department Talakanneft). Previously, the license was owned by YUKOS.

On December 18, 2012, Surgutneftegaz won the tender for the right to develop one of Russia's largest oil fields named after Shpilman with reserves of 145 million tons in category C1, 250 million tons in category C2 and about 32 million tons in category C3. The company paid 46.2 billion rubles for the right to develop; during the competition with Rosneft, Gazprom Neft, the initial price was exceeded more than three times.

Operations

The company's production facilities are mainly concentrated in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Yugra. According to Surgutneftegaz, the recoverable reserves of oil and natural gas owned by the company amount to about 2.5 billion tons of oil equivalent. The company's base field is Fedorovskoye - in 2008, the CIS received 9.9 million tons from it (16% of production, in 1983 the volume of production here was 36 million tons), also among the largest fields (in descending order of production in 2010) are Lyantorskoye, Zapadno-Surgutskoye, Bystrinsky, Severo-Labatyuganskoye, Konitlorskoye, Yukyaunskoye, Vachimskoye, Talakan, etc.

The Company has seven oil and gas production departments (NGDU) in its assets: Surgutneft, Bystrinskneft, Fedorovskneft, Komsomolskneft, Lyantorneft, Nizhnesortymskneft, Talakanneft (Yakutia).

Surgutneftegaz controls the Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery in the city of Kirishi, Leningrad region, the Surgut Gas Processing Plant. There are a number of sales divisions in the Central and Northwestern Federal Districts of Russia — "Pskovnefteprodukt", "Kaliningradnefteprodukt", "Tvernefteprodukt" and "Novgorodnefteprodukt". In addition, the company has a research base: the Institute "SurgutNIPIneft" and the design institute "Lengiproneftekhim".
