Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) will construct and demonstrate a high power primary battery for sonobuoy applications that can be stored in an inert state and rapidly activated on demand to provide >3500W/L, 450Wh/L and 150Wh/kg. This battery will increase the available energy and operating duration for active and passive Navy sonobuoys. During the Phase II, PSI will deliver two full scale prototype on demand high power primary batteries supplying the targeted energy and power density while meeting all mass and form factor requirements. PSI will develop and demonstrate reliable activation and battery management systems (BMS). Prototype batteries will be constructed and the performance in each state characterized. Safety testing will be conducted following Navy procedures to demonstrate that the cell and battery can be safely evaluated in a shipboard environment. PSI shall fabricate 10 First Article prototypes batteries during the option effort. PSI will prepare a Phase III development plan that will outline transition of the technology to Navy use. PSI anticipates manufacturing the designed battery for multiple applications and the development plan will illustrate the path to supporting production of this On Demand High Power Primary Battery at the future target of 5000 units/year.
