The Oktyabrskaya Railway, a branch of JSC Russian Railways, is one of the largest railways in the Russian Federation, has an operating length of 10,440.9 km and serves an area with a population of more than 25 million people. The road is divided into six regions: Moscow, St. Petersburg-Vitebsk, St. Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Murmansk and Volkhovstroevsky. 69.7 thousand people work at the railway site. In the transport system of the North-West region of Russia, the railway holds a leading position - it accounts for 60% of freight traffic and 40% of passenger traffic.

According to the results of 2020, enterprises on the road range sent 106.6 million passengers in suburban traffic, 11.6 million passengers in long-distance traffic and transported 290.8 million tons of cargo.

The Oktyabrskaya highway passes through the territory of eleven subjects of the Federation - Leningrad, Pskov, Novgorod, Vologda, Murmansk, Tver, Moscow, Yaroslavl regions, the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg and the Republic of Karelia, mutually beneficial relations with which are built on the basis of agreements signed with the Administrations of these regions on interaction and cooperation.

The main feature of the transport complex of the North-West of Russia is its export-import orientation. In the service area of the Oktyabrskaya road there are 8 border crossings, of which four are on the border with Finland, two each with Estonia and Latvia.

The line Vyborg - St. Petersburg - Moscow is a link of the ninth "Crete" international transport corridor. The Oktyabrskaya road also passes the most important corridors for transit traffic, which have an international status, "North-South" and "Europe-Asia".

An important role in the implementation of foreign trade relations is played by the existing commercial ports of St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Vitino, Vyborg, Vysotsk, Primorsk, as well as a new port under construction in the Baltic - Ust-Luga, which are located in the service area of the Oktyabrskaya railway.

The Oktyabrskaya Railway, the oldest transport artery in Russia with a rich history, is currently undergoing a period of renewal in order to meet the level of tasks set for the country's transport complex by the government of the Russian Federation. The road satisfies the demand for transport services of passengers and the largest manufacturers of industrial products in St. Petersburg, Karelia, the Kola Peninsula, and the Non-Black Earth Region. The Oktyabrskaya road is a link between the East and the West and ensures the growing international exchange of goods. The main directions of the highway - Murmansk - St. Petersburg - Moscow and St. Petersburg - Costa - the most important links in the international transport corridors "North - South" and "Europe - Asia".

Ensuring the delivery of goods to the largest ports of the Baltic, White and Barents Seas, connecting the regions of Russia with the countries of Northern Europe and the Baltic States, the workers of the Oktyabrskaya Mainline solve the problems of integrating Russian railways into the world transport system and forming a single transport space, enshrined in the concept of "Transport Strategy of Russia", adopted in 2003. Investment activities are based on a progressive scientific, technical, and innovative policy for the development of railway infrastructure.

One of the main tasks is to improve the technology and increase the efficiency of the transportation process to reduce the cost of transportation, and consequently, reduce the transport component in the final price of products. The degree of demand and competitiveness of railway transport depends on how cost-effectively the operation of the railway will be organized.

The main goal is to fully satisfy the demand for transportation, improve the quality of transport services for cargo owners and passengers, and ensure an individual differentiated approach to customers. At Oktyabrskaya, the necessary conditions are being created for this: logistics principles are being implemented in the management of the transportation process, information technologies are being developed, and the range of transport services is expanding. We are open to partners and ready to jointly solve all emerging problems. Our principle is effective, fruitful interaction with cargo owners, other modes of transport, regional administrations in compliance with the parity of interests and the achievement of a harmonious development of the economy of the North-West region.
