Overview

Mortal Combat (2011) was the ninth main installment in the popular video game franchise. This edition was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It was considered a soft reboot of the franchise. The game was available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, and Microsoft Windows.

An expanded version of the game was released in 2012 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and for Microsoft Windows in 2013. At the game's release, Mortal Kombat received positive reviews and won several awards for fighting game of the year. The game was also a commercial success, selling one million copies in the first month. The first sequel to the game, Mortal Kombat X, was released in 2015, with another follow-up, Mortal Kombat 11, released in 2019.

Plot

The plot of this game, as a soft reboot, retold the events of the first three games, with a new timeline in which Raiden received a message from his future self, which starts the conflict of the game with the classic characters and scenarios, but offering a new timeline. The characters involved in the game include the following:

  • Johnny Cage
  • Sonya Blade
  • Scorpion
  • Cyrax
  • Liu Kang
  • Jax Briggs
  • Smoke
  • Sub-Zero
  • Kitana
  • Jade
  • Kung Lao
  • Kurtis Stryker
  • Kabal
  • Cyber Sub-Zero
  • Nightwolf
  • Raiden

The gameplay also changed to fit the developments in video games from the previous releases of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The buttons changed to give players more granular control of the characters movement, offering the player a chance to execute special moves with less effort, and offering new animations for character introductions, outros, and fatalities.
