Michael Sena

Michael Sena is the CEO and cofounder of 3Box Labs and cofounder of the Ceramic Network. He was also a cofounder and product lead at uPort, director of product at ConsenSys, and product manager at Jump Associates. Sena began his career at Barclays Capital in 2010. He is also a private investor.

Michael Sena is the CEO and cofounder of 3Box Labs. He founded the company in 2018 with Joel Thorstensson and Danny Zuckerman and he helped invent the Ceramic Network in 2019. 3Box Labs creates open-source software that redefines the relationship between users, applications, and data to develop a more open, safe, and collaborative web. The Ceramic Network is an open-source platform for real-time data stream processing and a decentralized data network that brings unlimited data composability to Web3 applications. 3Box Labs also builds protocols and tools that enable the growth of the Ceramic Network ecosystem, such as IDX, a decentralized identity system.

In 2019, Sena helped 3Box raise $2.5 million in seed funding, and in February 2022, he helped the company secure an additional $30 million in series A funding.

Michael Sena was a cofounder and product lead at uPort, a company he started while at ConsenSys in 2016. ConsenSys builds Ethereum blockchain infrastructure and applications, such as MetaMask.uPort was a blockchain identity platform that provided users with a central place to establish a complete digital identity and authenticate themselves wherever uPort was accepted. uPort has since been split into two new projects, Serto and Veramo.

uPort was the first platform for decentralized identity and self-sovereign data built on Ethereum and IPFS. Sena worked on the initial version of the DID standard (now a part of W3C), was a founding member of the Decentralized Identity Foundation, and delivered products that were used by many clients including the governments of Switzerland and Dubai, as well as various Fortune 500 companies.

Michael Sena began his career at Barclays Capital in New York City. He was an intern there during the summer of 2010 before graduating from Princeton University in 2011. After graduating, he joined the firm full time and was an analyst with them for another two years.

After Barclays, Sena became a product manager with Jump Associates in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2014. At Jump Associates, he was an entrepreneur in residence (EIR) for enterprises where he incubated venture portfolios, built digital products, and integrated systems, and designed user experiences. He left Jump Associates to become the director of product for ConsenSys in Brooklyn, New York in 2016. Near the same time, he also cofounded uPort.

Michael Sena earned a B.A. in political economics from Princeton University in 2011. While at Princeton, he played varsity football and was active in the university cottage club and model congress. Sena also holds FINRA Series 63 and 7 licenses. In 2007, he graduated from Immaculata high school in New Jersey, a private Catholic school near his hometown of Branchburg, New Jersey.
