Who is Kate Moss?

With a distinctive small stature and size zero figure that stood in sharp contrast to many of the curvy supermodels of her time, Kate Moss created a niche for herself in the modelling industry. She popularized the notion of delicate-beauty and the wide-eyed ‘waif’ looks. She is one of the most iconic figures of the fashion industry and has appeared in the covers of over 300 magazines. Furthermore, she has worked with all the top and established fashion labels, designers and photographers in the industry including, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Bulgari, Calvin Klein, Chanel and Rimmel. Successfully establishing herself in the forefront of the fashion scenario, she went on to become one of the world’s leading fashion models. However, not just limiting herself to the ramp, Moss ventured into the world of entrepreneurship with the launch of her own clothing line, that has diversified and broadened her horizon. Additionally, she has also featured in a number of music albums and videos. She is a very private person and rarely appears on television or gives interviews.

Career

In 1988, at the age of fourteen, she was spotted at the JFK Airport, New York City, by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Model Management. Sarah was the pioneer of the ‘waif’ look’

Her career in modelling began in 1990 as she posed for black-and-white photographs for the British magazine, ‘The Face’. The pictures were taken by Corinne Day who titled the shoot as, ‘The 3rd Summer of Love’.

At the age of eighteen, she was the face of the brand ‘Calvin Klein’. She was part of the advertisement campaign for the perfume, ‘Obsession’, for which she modelled with Mark Wahlberg. The advertisement gave her a major breakthrough as she was noticed all around the world. While some acknowledged and appreciated her skinny appearance, the rest scorned her off as anorexic.

In January 1993, she was featured for the first time on the British Vogue magazine. Within a period of two months, she appeared on the cover of the same magazine.

When being voluptuous and curvaceous was the order of the day, with the likes of Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Elle Macpherson donning the same, Moss defied all rules and became the anti-supermodel of the 1990s.

Apart from walking the ramp and appearing on the cover of magazines, she has appeared in several of the English rock band ‘Oasis’s singles, including, ‘Don’t Go Away’, ‘Fade Away’ and the 1997 album titled, ‘Be Here Now’.

In 1999, she appeared in the short film ‘Blackadder: Back & Forth’, which was a British screen comedy. She played the role of ‘Maid Marian’

Over the years, she has appeared in a number of prestigious and well known fashion magazines in the UK, the US and France including ‘Vogue’, ‘W’, ‘Another Man’, Vanity Fair’ and ‘the Face’.

In 2003, she was featured in ‘The White Stripes’ music video titled, ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’. In the music video, she was seen pole dancing.

In 2005, she appeared as a model for the Rimmel London mascara. In the advertisement, she was seen wearing leather and riding on a motorbike in London to the tunes of the rock song, ‘Another Cold Beer’.

In 2006, she made a comeback to modelling after a cocaine scandal. In the autumn/ winter season that year she bagged over 18 major modelling contracts.

In 2007, she released her own collection in collaboration with Katy England for ‘Topshop’, a woman’s clothing line. The collection consisted of designs and creations that were created based on her sense of style.

Later in the year 2007, she collaborated with ‘Coty’, a line of global beauty products. They launched a line of body lotions and fragrances.

In 2010, she collaborated with Longchamp, a French luxury leather goods company in order to design a unique collection of handbags. She had previously been part of their campaigns for over eight seasons.

In 2011, she served as the brand ambassador and face of the Spanish fashion retailer, Mango.

In 2012, she was seen in George Michael's video for the song titled, ‘White Light’. The same year she also performed at the 2012 Olympic Games along with Naomi Campbell. She was brand Supremes’ model for its 2012 spring/summer collection.

In 2013, she posed with singer Rihanna for a cover shoot for the ‘V magazine’. The shoot was an intimate one and it depicted both of them in lingerie, in a seductive embrace.
