Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug from the group of propionic acid derivatives that has analgesic and antipyretic effects.

Common side effects include heartburn and rashes, but compared to other NSAIDs, it is less likely to cause gastrointestinal bleeding. May increase the risk of heart failure, kidney and liver failure. At low doses, it does not increase the risk of heart attack, but it does at higher doses. Ibuprofen can also make asthma worse. While it is not clear if the drug is safe to use in early pregnancy, it appears to be harmful in later pregnancy and is therefore not recommended. Like other NSAIDs, ibuprofen works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins by reducing the activity of the cyclooxygenase enzyme. Ibuprofen may be a weaker anti-inflammatory than other NSAIDs.
