The horse (Equus ferus caballus)[2][3] is a domesticated equine mammal. It belongs to the taxonomic equine family and is one of two existing subspecies of Equus ferus. The horse has evolved over the past 45-55 million years from a small polydactyl creature to the large animal we have today. Humans began domesticating horses around 4000 BC, and domestication is believed to have become widespread by 3000 BC.
