Hockey is a family of games on ice, tartan, plastic, wood, or grass in which two teams try to hit (with a ball or puck) an opponent's goal, using their sticks. Each team has one goalkeeper, who defends his team's goal, and several field players. There are many types of hockey, such as puck hockey, ball hockey, field hockey, and others.

In most of the world, the term "ice hockey" refers to field hockey without elaboration, while in the United States, Canada, Russia and most countries of Eastern and Northern Europe the term usually refers to ice hockey.
