Electronic Arts (EA) is one of the world's largest third-party video game publishers. They have transitioned from a console-based video game publisher to the one of the largest publishers on consoles, personal computer (PC), and mobile. The firm owns number of large franchises, including Madden, FIFA, Battlefield, Mass Effect, Dragon's Age, and Need for Speed. EA recently signed a 10-year contract with Disney that granted EA the exclusive rights to develop Star Wars games for core gamers across all platforms.

Revenue

In 2019 Electronic arts posted a total net revenue of $4.950 billion. Their expected net revenue for 2020 is $5.410 billion. The company splits their revenue by stream, where game consoles (Sony's Playstation, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's Switch, respectively) accounted for $3.7 billion of the companies 2020 net revenue. Games for PC accounted for $773 million, while $807 million came from mobile games. The final $11 million came from their "other" category.

Electronic Arts follows the industry standard of games-as-a-service, also known as "freemium" gaming or "loot boxes" whereby a user can increase or augment their gaming experience through real money purchases. These "live services" as EA dubs them accounted for 59% of EA's total revenue, approximately $2.2 billion. Full game downloads account for 19.8% of their revenue and mobile accounted for 21.5%.

Games Divisions

Electronic Arts is organized into three divisions: EA Studios, EA Mobile and Maxis. EA Studios is responsible for developing games and related content and services across a range of game categories. EA Mobile develops and publishes interactive games for mobile phones and tablets, and some casual games for PC. Maxis focuses on creating games and related content and services which engage player creativity.
