Overview

Daniel Craig is an English actor. He is best known for playing the fictional British Secret Service agent James Bond, whom he portrayed in five films from 2006 to 2021, and detective Benoit Blanc in the Knives Out film series.

Early life

Craig was born on March 2, 1968, in Chester, England, to Timothy John Wroughton Craig and Carol Olivia Craig (née Williams). He moved to Liverpool with his mother and sister after his parents divorced in 1972. It was there that Craig first became interested in acting, and he began starring in school plays at the age of six with the encouragement of his mother. Craig continued acting through high school, when at sixteen, he auditioned for the National Youth Theatre's (NYT) troupe on their tour of Manchester. He was accepted and moved down to London in 1984.

Craig waited tables and worked in restaurant kitchens to support himself while acting in several tours with the NYT. In 1988, after a multitude of unsuccessful auditions, he was accepted into the Guildhall School of Music and Drama at the Barbican. While enrolled, Craig rubbed elbows with fellow actors Ewan McGregor, Alistair McGowan, Damian Lewis, and Joseph Fiennes, among others. After studying for three years under Colin McCormack, an actor from the Royal Shakespeare Company, Craig graduated in 1991.

Acting career

Craig made his feature film debut in the 1992 movie The Power Of One. He notably appeared in the BBC2 miniseries Our Friends In The North in 1996. Craig's career rose to further prominence with supporting roles in the films Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Road to Perdition in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and with his leading performance in the 2004 crime drama film Layer Cake.

Craig achieved international stardom in 2006, when he was selected to be the sixth actor to portray James Bond. His first Bond film, Casino Royale, was a critical and commercial success and turned Craig into a household name. Craig would portray Bond in four more films: 2008's Quantum of Solace, 2012's Skyfall, 2015's Spectre, and 2021's No Time To Die. Craig's Bond films are the most theatrically successful of the entire series, bringing in over $3 billion worldwide between Casino Royale and Spectre alone. Additionally, Craig has received critical acclaim for his role as detective Benoit Blanc in the 2019 mystery film Knives Out, as well as its 2022 sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Personal life

Craig was married to Scottish actress Fiona Loudon from 1992-1994, with whom he had one daughter, Ella, in 1992. Since 2011, Craig has been married to fellow actress Rachel Weisz, with whom he has one daughter, born in 2018. The couple resides in the Cobble Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.
