Abstract

Marines obtain foundational knowledge by rote learning material through lecture, reading, and memorization. Learning is more effective when the presentation and testing material used in these traditional methods are tailored to the individual student’s knowledge level, an approach called adaptive training. Significant barriers to Marine Corps adoption of adaptive training systems include implementation difficulty by non-specialists and proprietary products that do not interface with the eLearning software tools used by the Schoolhouses. To address these issues, Charles River Analytics proposes a system for Marine Adaptive Schoolhouse Training with E-Learning Repetition Technology (MASTERY) to enable Marine Corps Schoolhouse instructors to bring adaptive training and principals of learning science to their courses, accelerating knowledge acquisition and retention by their students. MASTERY combines multidimensional stimulus representation, Bayesian item response theory, and monitoring of the declarative-to-procedural knowledge transition to tailor content presentation and gamified feedback to individual student progress. MASTERY includes a web-capable backend for data collection and intuitive user interfaces that enable instructors to configure content and monitor students and enable students to engage with content on desktop or mobile devices.
