Abstract

In many circumstances across the USAF, instructors have limited access to equipment and resources to support schoolhouse training for both operational and maintenance applications. Instructors need intelligent, virtual, and portable training solutions to augment current training, providing an opportunity for students to learn complex procedures and fault conditions without live equipment, and to continue that learning after leaving the schoolhouse. Charles River Analytics, in partnership with DiSTI Corporation, brings a robust commercial solution to this challenge, providing a framework for developing intelligent virtual training systems for maintenance and operational procedures suitable to address a wide range of learning objectives and troubleshooting skills. We propose to extend this capability to develop Evaluation-Driven Active Guide for Learning Procedural Events (EAGLE), a just-in-time intelligent virtual trainer (IVT). To prove the effectiveness of the EAGLE solution, we will develop a prototype addressing requirements identified by 338th Training Squadron (TRS) for an IVT targeting ground mobile terminals. EAGLE will extend our existing commercial solution with advanced intelligent tutoring and simulation to address complex troubleshooting skills, asynchronous reach-back training to enable instructor support while deployed, and high-fidelity screen and virtual reality training to effectively explore troubleshooting procedures.
