Alan Jay Perlis was born in Pittsburgh on April 1, 1922, and later died in New Haven, Connecticut on February 7, 1990. He was a mathematician and computer scientist, known for his notable work in creating the programming language ALGOL W. Perlis received the Turing Award in 1966.
He completed his education at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, and Taylor Allderdice High School. Philip Franklin was Perlis' doctoral advisor.
