Peter the GreatPeter the Great was a Russian Tsar in the late 17th century who later on became the first Emperor of Russia. A very powerful ruler, he was famous for engaging in numerous military campaigns in order to expand his Tsardom into a large empire. Born as the 14th child of Tsar Alexis by his second wife, he was forced to shoulder the responsibilities of Tsardom from an early age. Tsar Alexis died when Peter was just four, and the deceased Tsar was succeeded by Peter’s elder half-brother, Feodar III. Feodar was a sickly youth and he died after a few years, leaving behind no legitimate sons. This gave rise to a dispute over who should inherit the throne. The next in line for the throne was another one of Peter’s elder half-brothers, Ivan V. However, Ivan was chronically ill and not viewed as a suitable ruler, so Peter, aged just 10, was chosen to become Tsar with his mother as regent. For a few years he ruled jointly with his brother Ivan and after Ivan’s death in 1696, Peter became the sole ruler. As ruler, Peter expanded his territories greatly and implemented several radical reforms in order to make Russia a great country and a major power in Europe

ShivajiShivaji was a legendary Maratha king, who established the Maratha kingdom in western India. Brought up under the able guidance of his mother and his father’s administrator, Dadoji Konddeo, he became a brave and powerful warrior, with military training in various fighting techniques. He plunged into conquests of forts and territories at the young age of 16, carrying out a number of successful expeditions. However, his combat with Bijapur Sultan’s general, Afzal Khan, at the Battle of Pratapgarh was his major blowout, following which he defeated the bigger forces of Bijapur at the Battle of Kolhapur, thereby establishing the Maratha dominance in the western region. His conflicts with the Mughal Empire resulted in the seizure of Pune, though he was later suppressed by the Mughal army, forcing him to sign the Treaty of Purandar and surrender a large number of his fortresses, followed by his arrest upon being invited at Agra. However, he escaped and avenged his defeat by recapturing the capitulated forts. Besides the Deccan, he also brought a number of provinces in South India under his reign. He crowned himself as the king of the Maratha kingdom and took upon the title Kshatriya Kulavantas Simhasanadheeshwar Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Louis XIV of FranceLouis XIV of France, also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, was the king of France from 1643 until his death in 1715. A monarch of the House of Bourbon, he was the son of the French King Louis XIII and his Spanish Queen Anne of Austria. His father died when Louis was a child and he succeeded his father in 1643 at the age of four years and eight months. His mother ruled as a regent on his behalf for the next few years. However, it was the Chief Minister Cardinal Jules Mazarin who held the true power throughout the young king’s early reign. It was only after the death of the chief minister in 1661 that Louis could begin his independent rule. As the king, he opted to continue some of his predecessor’s policies regarding the governance and sought to eliminate feudalism from all parts of France. He proved to be a capable and powerful king and led his country in three major wars: the ‘Franco-Dutch War,’ the ‘War of the League of Augsburg,’ and the ‘War of the Spanish Succession.’ Having ascended the throne at such a young age, he had a long reign; in fact, his reign of 72 years and 110 days is the longest of any monarch from a major country in European history.
