Chocolat (Hangul: 쇼콜라, Syokolla), commonly stylized as ChoColat, was a South Korean girl group created by Paramount Music in 2011. The group's name stems from the idea that each member is reminiscent of a different type of chocolate.
Career
2011: Debut and I Like It
On August 2, 2011, Chocolat was revealed to the public by Paramount Music as the first mixed race group to debut in South Korea.[3] Prior to their debut, their music had been described as electronic club music, a mix of the disco of T-ara's "Roly-Poly" and the club sounds of 2NE1's "I Am The Best".[4] They have also said their role models are from girl group 2NE1.[4]
The song "I Like It" was brought to the group at the last-minute by the Paramount's president, thinking that it better represented the group's image. At this point, the band had already recorded seven songs and were rehearsing another song for their debut.[1] At first, the song was not well-liked, but public reception made them more comfortable with it.[1]
The music video for "Syndrome" was released on August 16, prior to the release of the digital single.[5] Following the digital release of the single on August 17, Chocolat had their debut performance on Mnet's M! Countdown on August 18, 2011,[6][7] later performing on August 19, 2011 on KBS Music Bank, on August 20, 2011 on MBC Music Core and finally a week later on SBS Inkigayo, on September 4, 2011. The song peaked at number 68 on the Gaon Weekly Digital Singles Chart and was written by British songwriter group DWB (Paul Drew, Greig Watts, Pete Barringer).[8][9][10] Before the debut, the group also had a cameo in the film Mr. Idol as "Korea's best group".[11]
Later in the year, it was revealed that the group would be returning with an extended play in December. Promotions for "I Like It" began on December 3, 2011 at the music show K-pop Con. Due to severe illness, member Jaeyoon was unable to attend recording sessions for the title track and therefore had to miss the "I Like It" promotional period altogether.[12] The EP contains a total of five songs, including the title track "I Like It", which is work of Girls' Generation's Genie's songwriters Anne Judith Wik, Robin Jenssen, Ronny Svendsen and Nermin Harambasic.[13] Writer team DWB, having previously composed their debut single, composed the EP's track "In a Heartbeat" (너만을 보고 너만을 그리는) and "World Domination" (싫어 싫어).[13] The EP was released on December 15, 2011, including their title track "I Like It", an English version of the single, and three other tracks, likely to have been amongst the seven previously recorded songs the group had prior to debuting.[14] The EP reached 63 on the Gaon Weekly Albums Chart,[15] while the title track went to number 81 on the digital singles chart.[16]
2012: Endorsements and One More Day
On January 5, it was announced that Chocolat had been chosen as new models for NBA Korea.[17] On January 21, through Twitter, member Tia announced that they wouldn't be going back home to celebrate the Korean New Year and would instead spend the holiday practicing for promotions for their follow-up single "One More Day".[18][19] The track, from their I Like It EP, was penned by Korean-American songwriters Jenny Hyun and Jean T. Na, and was originally sung as a demo by Hyun and titled "Same Thing To Her".[20] The first performance for "One More Day" was broadcast through KBS's Music Bank on February 3. The music video was then released on February 9, 2012,[21] alongside the physical and digital single album,[22] which included the title track, a B-side song titled "Get Up", as well as instrumentals of both songs.[21] The music video shows the members performing a chair dance contrasting with the storyline involving the girls capturing the man who's deceived them and punishing him for what he's done. The single reached number 83 on the Gaon Weekly Digital Singles Chart.[23] The song is scheduled to be used as a theme song for a movie currently being filmed in the United States.[13]
2013: Black Tinkerbell
On May 29, it was confirmed that Chocolat would be releasing new material in June. A week earlier the members had been reported to have been filming their upcoming music video for their comeback.[24] The group has since been a four-membered unit, as their former main vocalist Jaeyoon continued her absence from activities. The new single, "Black Tinkerbell", is about the love of Peter Pan's fairy, Tinkerbell, who stays by his side although he has found a love of his own, Wendy. The track was composed by Kim Euisung, a member of the group Bring The Noiz, who was inspired to write the song for Chocolat after hearing people compare them to fairies. The song took almost two years to be written, and the recording took six months to be perfected.[25][26][27] The single also includes a B-side, "All Night Long", composed by the DWB songwriting team.
On June 5, Chocolat performed a preview of "Black Tinkerbell" for the first time on Arirang TV's Afterschool Club.[28] After a one-year-and-three-month hiatus, the group released the single and its music video on June 11, 2013 in South Korea.[29] The first performance for "Black Tinkerbell" was broadcast through KBS's Music Show! Champion on June 13, followed by Music Bank on June 14.[30] "Black Tinkerbell" reached number 81 on the Gaon charts.[31]
2017: Disbandment
On February 3, 2017, Tia officially announced her departure from the group.[32] On April 14, 2017, Melanie did an interview with the website 'Kpopalypse' when she confirmed that the groups' contracts had officially concluded as of February 2017 saying that "It was a long time coming. I mean a really long time coming, I wanna say maybe since the beginning of the group, I saw it coming". She also said that she has not kept in contact with Soa or Tia, but has contacted Juliane as they've gotten closer.[2]

Lalisa Manobal (also spelled Manoban; born Pranpriya Manobal, March 27, 1997), known mononymously as Lisa, is a Thai rapper, singer and dancer based in South Korea. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Blackpink formed by YG Entertainment.
Roseanne Park (born 11 February 1997), known mononymously as Rosé (Korean: 로제), is a Korean-New Zealand singer and dancer[3][4] based in South Korea.[1] Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Rosé signed with South Korean label YG Entertainment following an audition in 2012, training there for four years.
Life and career
1997–2015: Early life and career beginnings
Roseanne Park (Korean: 박채영; Park Chae-young) was born on 11 February 1997[5][6] in Auckland, New Zealand, to South Korean immigrant parents.[7] She has an older sister. In 2004, at the age of seven, Rosé and her family moved to Melbourne, Australia.[8] Rosé initially attended Kew East Primary School graduating in 2009, attending Canterbury Girls' Secondary College in Melbourne for her secondary schooling and studied law.[4] She began singing and learned to play guitar and piano as a child and performed in church choirs.[8][4]
In 2012, 15-year-old Rosé attended an audition in Sydney, Australia for South Korean record label YG Entertainment at her father's suggestion[8] ranking first among 700 participants.[9][10] She was a big fan of YG Entertainment, citing they had all the "cool" groups.[11] Within two months, she dropped out of school, signed with the label as a trainee and moved to Seoul.[4] She initially presumed her father's idea was a joke due to the distance and difficulty of becoming a singer overseas, stating:
In Australia, I didn't think that there was much of a chance for me to become a singer, especially to become a K-pop star... I was living so far from the country that it never really occurred to me as a possibility.[8]
The same year, Rosé was given an opportunity to feature on labelmate G-Dragon's song "Without You" off his EP One of a Kind (2012). Her name was not publicised at the time of release with her credit revealed following her announcement as a Blackpink member.[12] The song peaked at number ten on South Korea's Gaon Music Chart and at number 15 on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100.[13][14]

Rosé trained at YG Entertainment for four years before she was revealed as the final member of the girl group Blackpink on June 22, 2016. She was the last member to be revealed amongst the four.[15] The group debuted on August 8, 2016, with the single album Square One, which produced the lead singles "Whistle" and "Boombayah".[16]
The singer has also appeared on a variety of broadcast programs such as music shows King of Masked Singer and Fantastic Duo 2. Her vocal performance on King of Masked Singer was met with a warm reception by the audience, to which Rosé commented that she "didn't know if the audience would like [her] singing" and that she felt "happy and relieved" at the positive result.[7] Rosé later appeared as a performer on the second season of Fantastic Duo. The show's production staff stated that her appearance was intended to "reveal Rosé's vocal appeal, which is different from Blackpink".[17]
On 1 June 2020, it was announced that Rosé would debut solo following the release of Blackpink's first Korean language full-length album.[18][19] On 30 December 2020, in an interview with South Korean media outlet Osen, her label revealed that filming for her debut music video would begin in mid-January 2021.[20] On 26 January 2021, a promotional teaser of Rosé's solo debut was released, revealing that a preview of her solo debut would be revealed through Blackpink Livestream Concert: The Show on 31 January 2021.[21][22]
Rosé and Anthony Vaccarello attending the Met Gala in 2021
Rosé's debut single album, entitled R, was released on 12 March 2021.[23] Upon release, with 41.6 million views in 24 hours on her lead single "On the Ground", she broke the almost 8-year record of former labelmate Psy's "Gentleman" for the most viewed South Korean music video of a soloist in 24 hours.[24] "On the Ground" peaked at number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the highest-charting song by a Korean female soloist in the US. The song also debuted and peaked at number 1 on both the Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts, the first song by a Korean solo artist to do so in the charts' histories.[25] R also set the record for the highest first-week sales by a Korean female soloist with 448,089 copies sold.[26] On 24 March, Rosé received her first-ever music show win as a soloist with her single "On the Ground" through South Korean cable music program, Show Champion, and would go on to win five more.[27] On 5 April, the music video for Rosé's song "Gone" was released.[28]
In September 2021, Rosé was invited by Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello as an accompaniment to the Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute in New York City.[29] Her attendance at the annual fundraising event resulted her to become the first female K-pop idol to attend the Met Gala, alongside CL.[30]
In December 2021, Rosé announced her collaboration with the mediation and sleep app Calm, which includes her own bedtime story titled “Grounded With Rosé” on the app.[31]

Influence
Through a radio interview, the singer cited her labelmate senior Taeyang of Big Bang as a role model towards her musical career.[32] Rosé also considered American singer Tori Kelly as an inspiration towards her musical style.[33] Rosé's voice has received acknowledgement in the K-pop industry for its distinct vocal timbre, following her debut as a member of Blackpink.[34] Following Rosé's performance on an episode of Fantastic Duo 2, South Korean singer Gummy, whom Rosé cited as a musical role model,[17] stated that "[Rosé's] voice is so unique, it's the [type of] voice young people love".[35]

Jennie Kim (Korean: 김제니; born January 16, 1996), known mononymously as Jennie, is a South Korean singer and rapper. Born and raised in South Korea, Jennie studied in New Zealand for five years, before returning to South Korea in 2010.
Early life
Jennie Kim was born in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul[3] on January 16, 1996, as an only child.[4][5] Jennie initially attended Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul, before moving to New Zealand.[6] When she was eight years old, she went on a trip with her family to Australia and New Zealand. While in New Zealand, her mother asked her if she liked the place and if she wanted to stay, Jennie replied "yes". A year later, she was sent to study at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland, New Zealand and lived with a home-stay family.[7] Jennie spoke about her experiences on learning a new language on MBC's special documentary English, Must Change to Survive (2006).[8] During her adolescent years, she dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer.[9] After completing Intermediate, she enrolled into ACG Parnell College.[7]
Jennie heard of K-pop while residing in New Zealand, particularly finding an interest in YG Entertainment's music.[10] Her mother planned to transfer her to the United States in Florida at the age of 14 to continue her studies leading to an occupation of a lawyer or teacher, however, the idea wasn't to her liking as she may not find work she liked while residing alone; her family supported her decision and soon had her moved back to South Korea in 2010.[10][11] Jennie auditioned to join YG Entertainment that same year and performed Rihanna's "Take a Bow", later succeeding in joining the label as a trainee.[12] Through High Cut Korea, she once revealed how she was afraid of strangers and terrible at taking initiative and so could barely greet during her audition.[13] Initially auditioning as a vocalist, the company believed she should embrace the role of a rapper as at the time she was the only trainee capable of speaking English, while most songs she covered included raps.[14][15] She attended Cheongdam Middle School for her studies.[16]
Career
2012–2017: Career beginnings and debut with Blackpink
Main article: Blackpink

On April 10, 2012, Jennie was introduced to the public through a photo titled "Who's that girl?" via the official blog of YG Entertainment.[17] Her photograph gained interest from netizens, soon becoming the most searched-after topic on portal sites under the name "Mystery Girl".[18][19] On August 30, YG Entertainment released a YouTube video through their blog titled "YG Trainee - Jennie Kim"., covering B.o.B.'s song "Strange Clouds" featuring Lil Wayne.[20][21] On September 1, Jennie was given the opportunity to make her first public appearance as the lead actress in G-Dragon's music video "That XX" from his extended play, One of a Kind.[22][23] On January 21, 2013, another video titled "Jennie Kim - YG New Artist", covering the song "Lotus Flower Bomb" by rapper Wale was released.[24] In March, Lee Hi featured Jennie on her B-side track, "Special" from her debut album, First Love,[25] while in August she featured on Seungri's B-side track "GG Be" for his extended play, Let's Talk About Love.[26] In September, she featured on G-Dragon's B-side track "Black" and recorded the hook in less than five days before the release of his album, Coup d'etat.[27] On September 8, she made her first stage appearance alongside G-Dragon on SBS' Inkigayo.[28]
On June 1, 2016, Jennie was the first to be revealed for YG Entertainment's newest girl group, seven years after the debut of 2NE1.[29] On August 8, 2016, she debuted as a member of girl group Blackpink with the release of their single album Square One alongside double A-side singles, "Boombayah" (붐바야) and "Whistle" (휘파람).[30] According to band-mate Jisoo, she is responsible for the general duties and decision making of the group.[31][32] Jennie recalled her six-year experience as a trainee through V Live, stating each month a group, dance and solo song had to be performed where the CEO, producers and artists of the company would watch and evaluate the progress of their training. She further explained that many things had to be done each month, from preparing outfits and songs to making the accompaniment, and practicing choreography.[33]
2018–present: Rising popularity and solo debut
Jennie appeared with fellow Blackpink member Jisoo on Running Man in July 2018.[34] A video of her crying after going through a horror room with Lee Kwang-soo went viral within South Korea, gaining over one million views on a portal site, and a combined total of over three million views throughout more portal sites, VODs, and social media. She went on to being selected as one of the best variety star of 2018 discovered by Running Man.[35] Jennie was then invited again after attracting attention through her previous appearance.[36][37] Jennie was said to rank first among casting choices and received multiple proposals from broadcasters for variety shows.[38][39] On October 1, Jennie was confirmed to join as a cast member for SBS' new variety show, Village Survival, the Eight. This marked her first permanent casting for a television series.[40]
In mid-October 2018, an announcement of Jennie's official solo debut was made.[41] Following a series of promotional teasers, it was revealed she would release a single album titled Solo with a lead single of the same name. In the midst of preparation for her debut, it was decided that her single "Solo" would first be revealed through Blackpink's In Your Area tour in Seoul on November 10 ahead of release two days later.[42] Jennie explained how "Solo" became the song for her debut through her press conference on November 12, stating: "When I'm at Teddy's studio, he'll make a song and I'll just record the guide for it. It wasn't that he was working on a solo track for me. He just said, 'I have something new, let's try it.' So I recorded the song he had, and it happened to be a great fit."[43] The song was described as a "hip hop track with pop elements", and is designed to showcase the co-existence of Jennie's external and internal characters of a "delicate girl" while in contrast an "independent woman".[44]
Jennie at the Sprite Waterbomb Festival 2018
Upon release, domestically her single, "Solo", debuted on Gaon Music Chart at number one and achieved a triple crown for simultaneously topping the digital, download, and streaming charts. The lead single remained the on the digital and mobile charts for a further two consecutive weeks, while on the streaming chart for a further three consecutive weeks.[45][46] "Solo" went on to becoming certified platinum for streaming by the KMCA, and soon earning her the "Song of the Year – November" at the 8th Gaon Chart Music Awards as well as the "Digital Bonsang" award at the 34th Golden Disc Awards.[47] Overseas, she topped the Billboard's World Digital Songs chart.[48][49] The single also went on to being featured in the New York Times's playlist.[50] At the time of its release, "Solo" became the most viewed music video by a female Korean solo artist of all time within a 24 hour period on YouTube.[51] She then became the first and only female Korean solo artist to surpass 300 million views on the platform within a time-span of six months since release.[52] Jennie's first appearance as a solo artist on SBS' Inkigayo and MBC Show! Music Core was postponed as broadcasters had cancelled all the performances scheduled for that week, so YG Entertainment uploaded "Solo" choreography videos as an alternative for fans.[53] As further promotions, YG Entertainment released Jennie – 'Solo' Diary on YouTube, sharing glimpses of her journey throughout the promotion period of her release.[54] On November 25, Jennie received her first music show win as a solo artist on Inkigayo.[55]
In April 2019, she became the first Korean solo artist to perform at Coachella. Her performance was listed under "The 10 Best Things We Saw at Coachella 2019", with Billboard describing it as "mind-blowing" and "stunning" for fans and casual passersby.[56][57] Jennie co-wrote her group's single "Lovesick Girls", which was released on October 2, 2020, as the third single off the group's first Korean-language studio album, The Album.[58]
Artistry
Influences
When Jennie first began to rap, she studied artists such as Lauryn Hill and TLC, whose work she admires and respects.[59] Jennie cited Rihanna as her main influence and role model.[60] She listened to several artists such as Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Harry Hudson, H.E.R. and Kacey Musgraves while worked on Blackpink's The Album.[61] Vocal coach Shin Yoo-mi, who's worked with Blackpink for six years until they debuted, had trained Jennie during preparations for her solo debut. In an interview, she described Jennie as a multi-player who is good at singing, rapping, and writing lyrics.[62]
Fashion
Jennie has been reading fashion magazines and looking at different clothing styles since she was a child.[63] Her interest in fashion came from her mother. Jennie says that Chanel has been part of her life since she was young and still remembers her first memory with the label founded by Gabrielle Chanel. "I remember when I was little, I look through my mother's wardrobe, and search for whatever vintage Chanel I could find" she told Elle Indonesia.[64] For her solo debut, she was involved in the production of the outfits and concept.[65] Jennie put together more than 20 outfits for her music video. She recalled in an interview with Billboard that during the process she had thought about the way each outfit would accompany the song and what she could do differently, helping her to learn many different ways of approaching fashion.[66][67] Through Elle Korea, Jennie cited she always tried to audibly and visually convey the message of her music, in which fashion became a huge factor of embodying the visual aspect of it.[68]
Image
Although Jennie has been noted for her chic and strong image on stage, she has a captivating, cute personality and reversal charm off-stage.[69] She describes herself as "quiet" and "shy", especially around strangers. "My personality may be what people think about my personality. But rather than being a person that other people have branded me as, I want to be a good individual who thinks for herself" she said in an interview with Harper's Bazaar when questioned about her personality.[70] The producer of Village Survival, the Eight, Jung Chul-min described Jennie as being "really funny", stating that, "Contrary to the charisma she shows on stage, she is a shy person who has girlish, baby-like charms. Jennie gets more comfortable with each episode, she brings out more fun and enjoys it even more".[71]
When asked about being described with words such as 'icon' and 'unique' by Elle Korea, Jennie says that "it’s really an honor to be an inspiration and iconic being for someone. When you express me with these words, I feel like [I need] to look nicer and better."[72]
Personal life
Jennie speaks fluent Korean and English along with basic Japanese. She also learned to speak some French.[73]
Impact and influence
