William A. Wellman (born: William Augustus Wellman) was an American film director, screenwriter, actor, and aircraft pilot. He was born on February 29, 1896, in Brookline, Massachusetts, and died on December 9, 1975, in Los Angeles. He was a citizen of the United States, and the son of Arthur Holbrook Wellman.
Wellman worked in various industries such as the movie, cinematography, and film industries. He directed numerous films, including Lafayette Escadrille , Roxie Hart, The Conquerors, The Ox-Bow Incident, The Public Enemy, Nothing Sacred, Battleground, and The Story of G.I. Joe. Some other films Wellman directed are The High and the Mighty, The Hatchet Man, Magic Town, Track of the Cat, and Tarzan Escapes.
