West Ham United is an English professional football club based in Stratford, East London. It plays in the Premier League, the top division in the English football league system. It was founded on June 29, 1895 and the team's home turf has been the Boleyn Ground since 1904.
The team was founded in 1895 by businessman Arnold Hills with the name Thames Ironworks FC, after the company for which he was the managing director.It turned professional in 1898 when it joined the Southern League and shortly thereafter resigned from the league in 1900 due to issues with the reorganization of the team. West Ham United was formed and incorporated as a company in the same year with many of the same players from Ironworks.In 1919, the team joined the Football League, initially playing in the second division and later being promoted to the first division. The team continued to play season after season until competition ceased in the 1939/1940 season due to World War II.
In the 1950s, there was more focus put on the club's youth school, which allowed for players to be trained and eventually led to a victory during the Cup Winner's Cup in the 1960s.West Ham United has also won two FA Cups in 1975 and 1980.In 1991, the West Ham United Women's team was formed and reached the FA Women's Premier League in the early 2000s. The men's team joined the Premier League in 1993 and is still a part of it today.
