The firm was founded in 1969 as the venture capital instrument of Laurance Rockefeller, grandson of John D. Rockefeller, and his siblings. The firms first investments were in the aviation industry and the semiconductor sector.The company made early investments in computer companies Apple and Intel. It was a key investor in Aetna Health and has invested in the pharmaceutical companies such as Ironwood Pharmaceuticals as well.
