Born on July 15, 1988 in Chicago, Illinois, Tristan Tate is the son of an English mother and an African-American father. His father, Emory, was a military veteran and an International Master in chess. Tristan has an older brother, Andrew, and a younger sister, Janie. Post their parents' divorce, the siblings relocated to England, their ancestral homeland, with their mother.

As a kickboxer, Tristan initiated his career in Luton, England, under the guidance of coach Amir Subasic at Storm Gym. His brother Andrew also pursued kickboxing, earning several ISKA championships. Tristan competed in the cruiserweight division before moving to super cruiserweight, and secured two ISKA kickboxing titles in his career, with a record of 43-9.
