He was born in Clarksville, Texas and holds citizenship in the United States. Smith attended Lemoore High School and later graduated from San Jose State University.

He is the son of Richard Smith and Dora Smith. Tommie Smith has received several awards in track and field competitions, including a gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City for the 200-meter race. Additionally, he earned a gold medal at the 1967 Universiade in Tokyo, also for the 200-meter race.
