Sketch is a sketching application designed to offer professional digital design. The application facilitates vector shapes to adapt to changing styles, sizes, and layout. It helps dimensions, positioning, opacity, blending modes, bitmap editing, grids, and grid tool, enabling users to design user interfaces, websites, and icons. Sketch has features for prototyping and collaboration with third-party software and handoff tools to view designs on non-macOS platforms.
Sketch is available on macOS and developed by the Dutch company Bohemian Coding. The software was first released on 7 September 2010 and won an Apple Design Award in 2012.
Files designed in Sketch are saved in its own .sketch file format, though .sketch files can be opened in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and related programs. The designs can also be saved in the popular PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, TIFF, and WebP formats. Users also have access to plugins developed for Sketch, including Felipe, which helps turn wireframes into UI elements; Runner, which speeds up access to tools and actions; Chart, which creates charts with local or live data from Google; Material, which allows the user to create, customize and share their own material theme; Anima Toolkit, which creates timeline animations; and React Sketch, which renders components to Sketch and builds a design system.
In December 2015, Sketch pulled its application from Apple's App Store and instead sold it through its proprietary website. Following this were changes to their licensing which saw users receiving updates for 1 year with the option to renew their license at the end of the year or continue using the last version published prior to the expiration of their license.
These costs are $99 one time payment for a single person with a $79 optional renewal fee. This cost gives users access to the app, one year of updates, one year of saving work to Sketch's cloud - which offers unlimited storage and version history - and a personal cloud workspace where people can be added to documents for feedback and developer handoff. For teams, the cost is $9 per contributor per month or $99 yearly. This cost offers teams access to the app, a shared cloud-based workspace where files can be shared and collaborated on, and team management.
