In 1340 Simeon took over the Moscow grand-ducal throne after the death of his father Ivan Kalita. According to the spiritual will of his father, Prince Simeon Ivanovich the Proud received 26 cities and towns, among them such important cities as Moscow, Kolomna and Mozhaisk.
After the death of Kalita Russian princes went to the Horde; but their rivalry Simeon the Proud with the rich and strong prince of Moscow, Simeon the Proud, was impossible. Simeon received without much difficulty from Khan Uzbek, who certified that he was "the great prince of all Russia" (this inscription was later embossed on his seal) and that "all the princes of Russia were given under his hand."
