The Shanghai Maglev Train is a magnetic levitation train that operates in Shanghai.
Maglev trains run without touching the ground because it uses magnetic levitation technology. Less noise even if they speed up to 300 kph. It runs smoother than trains with wheels, and it is environmentally friendly.
On March 1, 2001, the Shanghai Maglev Train began its construction. The Chinese premier Zhu Rongji and the German chancellor Gerhard Schroder inaugurated the train in 2002. On November 12, 2003, during a test run, the train achieved a Chinese record speed of 501 km/h. The Shanghai Maglev Train started to serve the public commercially by January 1 of 2004.
