Sean Gourley

Sean Gourley

A New Zealand entrepreneur and physicist. He is well-known for founding Primer, a machine intelligence company.

Sean Gourley is a San Francisco-based New Zealander who has a background in physics and has founded several companies. He sits on the board of directors as Anadarko and is also a TED Fellow.

Education

Gourley obtained his Master's of Science in the field of Physics: Nanotechnology from the University of Canterbury. In 2006, he received his Doctor of Philosophy in Physics: Complex Systems from the University of Oxford.

Career

While earning his PhD from the University of Oxford, Gourley also worked as a research scientist for NASA in 2004 and was a research fellow for the university. In 2009, he co-founded and was Chief Technology Officer for Quid, a search engine that is capable of analysis using artificial intelligence. He became an Independent Director for Anadarko, a petroleum corporation in 2015.

Gourley launched his own company in 2015 called Primer. It is an artificial intelligence company that develops machines which can read and write analyses of considerable datasets. The company has raised over $54 million in funding since its inception.
