Robert Burns Woodward, born on April 10, 1917, in Boston, was a chemist and teacher from the United States. Woodward was educated at Quincy High School (Massachusetts) and continued his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Throughout his career, Woodward has mentored several doctoral students, including Kendall Houk, Stuart Schreiber, Ronald Breslow, Steven A. Benner, Daniel S. Kemp, Christopher Spencer Foote, Robert Shapiro (chemist), and William R. Roush. He was the son of Arthur Smith Woodward.
Woodward's contributions to the field of chemistry were recognized with the 1965 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He passed away on July 8, 1979, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
