Riverlane

Quantum computing software company building an engine for the simulation of microscopic systems, with the goal of replacing expensive laboratory tests with computer simulation.

Riverlane is a spin-out company from the University of Cambridge that develops software and algorithms for quantum computers. The company is building an engine for simulating microscopic systems, with the goal of replacing expensive laboratory tests with computer simulation. Collaborating with other companies and academics, Riverlane is developing two early use cases for their software: the design of new battery materials and new drugs.

The company is based in Cambridge, United Kingdom and was founded in 2017 by CEO Steve Brierly.

Technology
Anion

Riverlane's Anian quantum software is a tool for users to apply the newest quantum algorithms, with a focus on chemical applications. It includes patented algorithms that decrease quantum hardware requirements. Anian is connected to a realistic quantum hardware emulator, allowing users to test ideas without having to use quantum hardware. Users can also experiment with different measurement strategies, noise models and algorithms. Anian is portable to any hardware based on trapped-ion or superconducting qubits.

DeltaFlow

DeltaFlow allows end-users, software providers and hardware developers to build full-stack software through a portable language. The latency that occurs when running hybrid algorithms on commercial platforms mitigates the quantum advantage. DeltaFlow enables feedforward programs and accelerates hybrid algorithms. The technology is portable and extensible, offering reconfigurable logic building sequences on demand. DeltaFlow also defines the Quantum Abstract Machine, a standardization that is sorely needed across the industry.

Funding

On June 13, 2019, the startup announced €3.7 million in seed funding. Cambridge Innovation Capital and Amadeus Capital Partners led the round in which the university’s commercialization arm, Cambridge Enterprise, also participated.

Timeline

January 2021
Riverlane raises a $20,000,000 series A round from Amadeus Capital Partners, Cambridge Innovation Capital PLC, Draper Esprit and University.
