The open source project began at a hackathon in Toronto, Canada in 2014 when Amir Taaki and his team of developers came up with the initial proof of concept for an online decentralized marketplace, called 'Dark Market', that would later become known as OpenBazaar.
On March 13, 2018 OpenBazaar announced they have completed their series A funding round raising $5 million in funding from OMERS Ventures, Bitmain, Union Square Ventures, BlueYard Capital, Digital Currency Group, William Mougayar, and Andreessen Horowitz.
